Fly Rod Types
Fly rods can be divided into three basic categories, based on how they bend.
A rod that bends from top to bottom is classed as a slow action rod. Although such
a rod may not be the best tool for distance casting, it provides a very accurate
cast and is ideal for playing fish that would otherwise break the leader.
A medium action rod bends from the middle to the top. It provides a longer distance
cast than a slow action rod and is better for setting the hook. It is not as accurate
as a slow action rod but is a good all-rounder.
A fast action rod is ideal for distance casting as it only bends about a quarter
of its length from the tip. When playing a fish, caution must be exercised, as it
is much easier for the leader to break or the hook to be pulled free.
Salmon in London
The River Thames is the longest river in England with its source in the Cotswold.
By 1950, the river has become very polluted by sewage and industrial waste, but
new laws finally resulted in a clean and safe river. So much so that salmon now
live in the river and are regularly seen, particularly near locks. As fishing is
free and only requires a NRA license for migratory trout and salmon, it is the most
cost effective salmon fishery in England.
