Fast Fish
The average sized rainbow trout can accelerate from a standstill to about 20 plus
mph in about one second. A larger fish can get in an extra one or two mph. If you
think of this in terms of seconds, it is over 30 feet per second. Compare this to
animals such as greyhounds or cheetahs; the rainbow trout is acutally faster out
of the 'gate'. In addition to this, a rainbow trout can jump up to five times its
length, or in human terms, around 30 feet.
Trout Senses
As humans, we believe our senses are very acute, but did you know that a rainbow
trout's senses are around 600 to 700 times our own? We can't begin to imagine how
it perceives its environment. It does not have a cerebrum yet can learn from experiences
extremely fast.
Rainbow trout can smell the difference between certain plant life as well as the
taste of different types of aquatic life. It develops a preference for a particular
food source as it evolves. In fact, its whole life is devoted to using its bodily
functions to sense food. Apart from taste and smell using its mouth and nostrils,
Rainbow trout can also taste and smell using other parts of its body.
